Reunion Island: GO AND VISIT IT!
- Why did I make a page about La Réunion?
You may think I am a Reunion native man. I will say: no, you are wrong! I am a poor little French man (who has some difficulties to speak and write English, I hope you'll apologize for my mistakes!), who was born near Belgium.
But this is not the point! Well, last December, during Christmas holidays, I was propelled to Réunion Island, thanks I don't know what time-and-space-breaking.
What a discovery! I really fell in love with this Island. Never would I have imagine that France had a so outstanding and varied department! (and yet, God knows that France is full of very beautiful departments). I do not hesitate to say that La Réunion is the first French department for its beauty!
Let me precise that it is not an island where you go only to rest on the beach although there is enough to do it! But you would miss tremendous sights if you keep on the beach, loooking at the blue of teh Indian ocean (even if it is far from being unpleasant to do so.).
- La Réunion as I see it
I am going to tell you about Réunion Island my way. First, you fly over the western coast to land at Gillot airport of Saint Denis that has just been renamed "Rolland Garros airport" in the memory of this famous Reunion man.
It is worth doing this trip only for this view!
The first thing you may notice is the diversity of the landscapes. From the beaches of the western coast to the cliffs of the eastern coast passing by the montain and its three cirques: Mafate , Salazie and Cilaos, the famous corniche road also called coast-road, the Volcano (piton de la fournaise), the green plains and the moon-like landscapes around the Volcano ... there is everything.
Then you can begin to discover the Island. There is not inly a diversity of the landscapes but also of the cultures. If you walk along the streets of Saint Denis, you can not miss it! You will see some Tamil temples, very well decorated with high colors. In the same street there is a mosque and a bit further, a catholic church. When you are on Réunion Isalnd, there are lots of different people and they all cohabit without any problem! I think this is a good less
Come to Reunion, you will be surprised all day long. If you have the possibility to do it, do not hesitate to fly over Reunion in helicopter or plane. It is rather expensive but it is worth doing it. Never have I seen something more beautiful!
Here are the phone numbers of the Gillot (Saint Denis) aero-club::

- Some other things that surprised me.
The corniche road: this road connects Saint Denis to Le Port and La Possession. It passes at the bottom of a cliff. When it rains, some rocks often fall down on the road. Some nets have been put over the wall (in fact it is sharks nets) in order to avoid teh rocks to fall on the road. However, some rocks keep on falling on the roads some times. They can weigh up to two tons and a half. It is sais that this road is the more expensive of the world.
Without any kind of link, I am going to talk about fruits and vegetables. Going to Réunion Island for Christmas allows you to enjoy, in addition with marvelous landscapes, all the local fruits and vegetables. Go and taste the delicious mangoes, lychees, coconuts, Victoria pineapples (the best of the world!), "bredes", "jacques", sweet potatoes...
And it is with more pleasure that you can taste the local cooking (especially if , as I had the pleasure to enjoy it, they are cokked by a real cordon bleu. I am still dreaming of "caris crevette", "caris poulet", "caris 'ti jacque", "canard fumé", "rougail saucisse", "rougail morue"...

Back to Réunion island.
